Coming across like an old school Balearic-Tinged banger complete with gloriously euphoric chorus, ‘A Moment Like That’ is an electro rave up unlike any other. Even though it’s a surefire four to the floor dancefloor staple in waiting, it actually came out of frontman Sam Hales’ processing of a particularly turbulent part of his life – and with the use of The Artist’s Way, envisioning joy and excitement on the other side of it. “It’s me backing myself, being in myself again and feeling confident” Hales says.
“It felt really good to sing like that because I hadn’t sung like that in a long time, and it was all coming back. Essentially ‘A Moment Like That’ started to become literally about that moment, about me feeling good about myself again”.
‘A Moment Like That’ is just another arrow in the quiver that is their forthcoming album EXPERIENCING FEELINGS OF JOY, released next month and including the previously released singles ‘Tell Me How It Feels’ and ‘Is It Love?’. According to Sam Hales, it also represents a rebirth of sorts for the band, and a personal crossing of the Rubicon for Hales from dark to light.
“I’d overextended and kind of cooked it, but I really found myself. That’s where the joy comes from, having this unwavering hope even after experiencing adversity. This record is the culmination of everything for me, because I’m so in love with it and I’m so addicted to music again.”
The Jungle Giants will also be coming to Aotearoa in July and are supported by the Tullamarines. NZ dates below.
