The incredible musical collective Postmodern Jukebox reached Auckland last night, treating the audience to an impressive array of expertly re-arranged jazz, ragtime, and swing covers of modern songs, including Nick Cave’s Red Right Hand and The Weeknd’s Die For You.

An ensemble cast of vocalists, dancers, and musicians showcased their talents, taking the audience on a journey through time and space, with snippets from Star Wars, 2001: A Space Oddysey, and even Super Mario Bros. Perhaps one of the most unexpected moments of the night came from drummer Willie Ray Moore, Jr, as he took us all by surprise with a stirring rendition of Soundgarden’s Black Hole Sun, playing as he sang from behind the kit.

The night ended with the crowd on their feet, snapping, clapping and dancing along to the grand finale All About That Bass, with the entire cast taking to the stage for the final official number of the night. Throughout the night, we were reminded of the significance of authentic live performance, in a time where AI is fast becoming a popular media for generating music and other art forms.
